Yes, your baby smells like crap, shit, manure and etc!!
It is believed in the Hmong culture and some other Asian culture that when a child is born, his or her first few years of life it is impolite to call someone’s child beautiful, pretty, cute, adorable and the like. Reason being is that Hmong people believe that around us are spirits; good and bad. When a spirit (or ghost and or monster, yes there is a difference in Hmong) hears that a child is beautiful, pretty, cute, adorable and etc they will try to take the child’s spirit to be their very own, to prevent this from happening instead of calling a child pretty we must say that the child is very smelling especially smelling like crap/shit. We can also state that the child looks hideous, beyond hideous and that too will not be an insult but in fact something very sweet.
When an evil spirits takes the child’s spirit away it is believe that the child will start to cry for no reason and the child will slowly looses his or her life away. It depends on how far the evil spirit has already taken your child’s spirit a shaman may be able to negotiate for the child back, if waited too long it most likely will be too late and the child is already long gone, nothing will be able to bring the child back.
This is the ONLY time and ONLY thing you can say to the baby without hurting his or her feelings! It is believe that while the child is still in his/her mother’s stomach, he or she is followed by his/her spirit parent’s, the parent’s that have taken care of the child while the child walks through the process of growing in his/her mother’s stomach. When unkind words are said to the child, it can and will affect the child’s growth, ability to learn or even prevent the child from being born.
So young mothers and fathers, don’t be insulted when someone say that your child is hideous or stinky, it’s actually a complement and be careful of the things you say to your unborn child or the things you say to your child during his/her first few years of life!

I find our culture belief so amazing when I come to think of it, but at the same time it is also scary because our belief are so strong. However, I never knew that Korean’s also believe that by calling their baby bad names will keep bad spirits away until a Korean friend told me their similar belief to our belief. Crazy, but amazing.
Lala, I totally agree, our culture is very fascinating, there’s so much to learn and there’s a never ending story to tell about our culture, it’s so vibrate and beautiful! There’s a few Asian culture that believes in the same thing.
