Hmong Hat
Posted on 10 October 2010
As we all know it’s almost time for the Hmong New Year and we all had been preparing our Hmong clothes and what not such as suggested in my few previous posts. This time I decided to make my own hat, if you look at it closely it’s obvious that it was made by an amateur (myself). I made a few bad judgement with the hat such as the fabric used and how it was cut, but I guess for the first time it wasn’t so bad.
When I finished I realized that I could had used the same black fabric I used for the Hmong shirt, too late, I cannot go back and used the better fabric. The black and white checker pattern I used for the hat was from a sheet of fabric I bought from NC when I was there for Labor Day. I cut a piece out for the Shee Cheng which is used to indicate that the lady wearing the hat is indeed not married (so guys, if you ever see a girl wearing a Hmong hat with a piece of black and white strip or checker pattern on their hat, they are single, go ahead and talk to them, if their hat does not have this piece, stay far far away, they are married, at least in traditional Hmong). I decided to had a modern touch with a bow on the back of the hat.
The pink fluffy thingy used on top of the hat was literally hand made. I bought a thing of yarn and spent at least 4 hours putting the fluff together and then cut it evenly. From all the cutting a piece of skin from my finger came off but it was all well worth it. It turned out better than what I was hoping for.
So all in all, for it being my first try at making this hat I thought I did a pretty decent job. I guess the more I make them the better they’ll be, but for now this will be the only hat I’ll be making, at least for this year.
Sorry the picture was taking from my Blackberry, I know I need to take my camera out, but I am having trouble with Photoshop CS4 so I won’t be using my camera until I get Photoshop fixed.

I love that creativity Moze! That bow in the back is awsome!
Thanks Lasia!!! I hope the person wearing this hat will like it! I did worked hard on this hat since it was my first time trying!!! Didn’t turn out as good as I was hoping, but nonetheless it’s okay. My sister loves the bow too!
It looks very stylish Ze, the bow in back is very cute. Now I have to pay more attention to the hat stripes. What about the guys, how can you tell if they are singled or married?

Nkauj Hli, as I’ve mentioned recently, my laptop had crashed on me and I am currently trying to retreive some files and tutorials from my old laptop thus the hat tutorial will have to wait until it is recovered. As for the Sev and the Shirt is has been completed already. Below are the links to the tutorials
