Preparing for the Hmong New Year
Posted on 03 October 2010
It’s almost new year and everyone (yes including myself) is preparing for the Hmong New Year. It’s a very exciting time of year and we’re counting down til that day. We have one month and a few weeks left before the Georgia Hmong New Year so all the dancers are practicing their dances and the mothers are preparing the outfits. I went to my aunt’s house yesterday, the girls were in the basement practicing their dances screaming yelling at each other while all at the same time they laugh and practice their dances. The mothers and older cousins were also in the basement working on the girls outfits and hats as they laughed and talked about the upcoming events and ideas for the new outfits. I was there while they were working on the hats and since there are plenty of room for help I decided to take over the beading of a hat so I decided to pick up a hat and helped my cousin Chee bead one of them. Chee had already designed the beads as how she liked it so all I did was followed her designs and try to make it look presentable. I thought the hat turned out pretty decent although I might had done better with the beading and the feather on top. But nonetheless I cannot wait to see these girls on stage once again this year to dance!!!
SORRY I DIDN’T BRING THE CAMERA WITH ME SO PICTURES WERE TAKEN WITH MY BLACKBERRY ONLY.

I’m excited cause this will be my first Hmong New year that I will be attending! I found a friend here in Florida and she happens to be Hmong. And I couldn’t believe that they have a Hmong New year here too. My friend invited me, so I’m definitely going.
Lome, I hope you are able to take some pictures from the FL New Year!!!
Sounds like a lot of fun with all the preparation. These hats turned out really good. Do they make a new outfit each year?
Nye, I am having a great time preparing the outfits and hat and I am sure my aunts are enjoying it a lot as well. The girls do make a new outfit each year for their dances. It’s only wear the wear the real traditional clothes that they do not make a new one but often time they always make new outfits.
I think getting them involved is a great way to teach them the culture and tradition.
Nye, I am glad these girls enjoy participating by dancing, they actually ask my aunt to teach them every year and I am glad!!!
