Split Rock Lighthouse
Posted on 21 July 2010
I have to say Split Rock Lighthouse was amazing, the drive it self was very beautiful! On the drive to Duluth MN was very disappointing as it started to down pour during our drive to beautiful Duluth MN, it was cold and raining, but I had hope that the rain well eventually stop so we can enjoy the beautiful city. Once we reached the City of Duluth we went to the nearby target to purchase some ponchos and sweaters to keep ourselves warm but good thing was that the rain finally stopped. Then we headed down to Lake Superior and enjoy a lake over look, it was beautiful (I’ll post up the little pictures that I took). Then after that we headed to Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbor MN, about 2 hours away from the Canada boarder. If we had more time we would had stopped by the boarder, but none of use brought our passport (but I believe I am the only person who have a passport).
The drive to Split Rock was just amazing, I wanted to take the scenic highway, but unfortunately we were unable to take that route. But the drive it self was still amazing. When we reached Split Rock Lighthouse we all took a small tour in their welcome center than off to the lighthouse we went. The lighthouse wasn’t was big as I was hoping for, but it was amazing, the first lighthouse I’ve ever step foot on. I’ve seen lighthouses from afar, but this was the first time I was able to step into the lighthouse and tour the area.
After we toured the Lighthouse keeper’s home and the lighthouse we took a trail down to the bottom to the lake which was of course Lake Superior. The hike was fun and long as my sister Cindy was such a good joke and everyone laughed at her and my cousin Kachia’s jokes. We all walked around the lake and I took a few pictures. It was such a pity that the day we were there, the sun decided that it did not wanted to come out. The lake was filled with fogs, lots of fogs and absolutely no sun at all, but it was still amazing. I thought it was very magical with the fog dancing along the coast line and the lighthouse.
The walk back to the lighthouse was painful, we took a very very very long flight of stairs back to the light house but it was all well worth it!!! I had a blast there. Our time was cut short since we were on a time limit so we left back to Duluth to have lunch than we headed home since it was a good 3ish 4 hours drive back home to St. Paul MN.
On our way home we just barely missed a storm that hit the Twin Cities. The drive home was dark and gloomy from the storm, but at the same time I thought it was beautiful, I know call me weird!
Next time when I visit MN, I’ll be sure to leave at least 3 days to explore up north MN, there are so many beautiful places that I want to see and maybe I’ll take the chance and drive to the Canada boarder. Maybe I’ll start planning for another trip, this time I’ll rent a car (then I’ll be 25 so I can really rent a car without getting charge an arm and a leg!!) and make sure I visit the whole state, not just selected few places!!!
I had a good time driving to Duluth MN and to Split Rock Lighthouse. I’ll share pictures of Duluth when I get the chance!!!
I had to cropped the above image since my sister Cindy was on the bottom corner opposite of the lighthouse pretending she was Cindy the little Mermaid. Good times! Good times!!

Beautiful images of the lighthouse. I saw several in NC but they are by the beach and not as dramatic as the one that you’ve captured here. I see that you guys were wearing sweaters, was the weather still cold there?
Nye, when we went it was a gloomy day so it was a bit chilly, but very nice at the same time. The weather in MN was very different from our southern weather, some days it was a bit chilly as other days were a bit warmer, but much cooler than our hot humid southern air.
I am looking forward to seeing more lighthouses, I somehow really like them!!
The weather up north is always weird but I love it. You should try going up there in the fall. Absolutely beautiful with all the changing colors of the trees. It’s so breathtaking. Love camping up north. Glad you visited and loved it.
Lovely, I somehow really like that weather up north, it was so hot and it wasn’t so cold, honestly it felt like autumn to me. I can totally imagine how beautiful it’ll be in the autumn, you know I wouldn’t mind living out there minus the snow in the winter. I hope to be able to visit North MN and stay there a few days the next time I visit MN.
We get the arctic winds coming through up north. Some days it’s very hot and some days, it’s really chilly. My friends and I love going camping up there whether it be cabin or tents. And the locals are quite nice…except Grand Marais. They’re kinda reserved but the area is beautiful and calm just like a good old small town straight from a novel. You should definitely stay a few days if you come back. There’s so many things to do up there that we haven’t done yet and planning on doing so when we go back there. It’s funny how the people who hates camping and travel far would jump up in a sec to go back there after their first time. And if you’re into fishing, it’s a big plus too.
Wow! That seems like a great scenic drive. I’ll love to go there someday and check it out too! You’ve got me curious. I love those kind of quick road trips with all of those dramatic yet subtle scenery. Next time when you’re in California, you should definitely have a road trip along the Nor Cal coast from Morro Bay up to Monterey Bay along the CA Route 1. It’s simply breathtaking and also scenic. It’s very scenic throughout the drive, but the most rewarding part is when you reach Big Sur and the Big Sur Bridge.

Hola, I love myself any beautiful Scenic road trips!! You know the last time I was in Ca which was this past summer I wasnt able to visit as many places as I had hoped for, but next time I do go back to visit Ca, I hope to be able to take this scenic road trip!! If I was to take this road trip it may just take me a few days. I’ll have to stop and enjoy the scenes before going to the next stop!! Thank you so much for the suggestions!!
looks pretty regardless of the weather but I know what you mean that the rain would spoil it
Nicki, it was very beautiful regardless of the weather, but I bet if the weather would had been a bit nicer, it would had been even prettier!
We were going to drive up to Duluth too but it was raining so I didn’t think it was worth it but I see it is absolutely beautiful! But we had our kids too so didn’t want them to get sick but def. next time!
