Hmong Remedies

Posted on 28 March 2010

As we all know I had been sick for the last week and boy it sure was painful! The good news is, I am feeling much better now, all thanks to my mom’s awesome Hmong remedies. My mom had called me early Saturday morning for me to go over to her place and she would give me some Hmong remedies, so my younger sister drove me to my parents house as I thought it was going to be just a day, we ended up sleeping at my mom’s place. When I got there my mom prepared some Hmong remedies for me. She boiled some sort of Hmong branches and leaves and made me drink it, it wasn’t a bad taste, just very bland. And then she made me sit shirtless and have two bowls of water, one is fresh water, one has these Thai medicines that smells kind of like Icy Hot mixed with water. I’ve always thought this particular remedy is painful for I hate blood and needles. My mom rubbed the bow of the green medicine and water on my back and stomach and tap it a little, she then rub it all the way up to my arms down to my middle figure and rub all the “blood” from all my other figures to the middle figure then she uses a string to tie it around the middle figured and poke it with a needle, she then let the blood drip into the fresh bowl of water and does the same for the other hand (of course she unties the finger once the blood drips). She then uses a knife to slowly scrap the top layer of all my finger nails. This Hmong remedy really works, every time I get sick, my mom always gives me this remedy and I always feel much better.

My mom had also use those same green medicine and uses a coin to rub my back back and forth until it leaves a red mark. These medicine are pretty much like Icy Hot where you can feel the cold burn where ever you rub the medicine in. I like the feeling, but main it hurts. She also uses these medicine to massage my arms and legs and also my head. Believe me, I had a good massage!

The last remedy my mom gave me was a very messy remedy; she boiled a few eggs then she trashes the yoke and uses a towel to hold the eggs sandwiched an old French coin and dip it in hot water and rub my face and body (front and back) with it.

You may be thinking “EWWW those all sounds so painful and nasty” but believe me, the outcome is amazing! I felt much better after my mom gave me the remedies, well after a nice sleep after those remedy just because I was so tired from the pain.

It is believed that all these remedies let your body relax and let those unwanted body toxic to leave the body. I believe in it, I feel much lighter when those remedies are done on me and I am always able to sleep better and relax better.

So now I do feel much much much better, the only thing that has not gone away yet is my coughing which totally sucks, but it’ll go away in no time! And from being so sick for a whole week, I lost a total of 5 lbs from it, I guess that’s a jump start on my diet. LOL But I think since I’ve felt so much better, I’ll gain it all back and then some, NOOOOOO.

WOW..your mom goes all the way with the Hmong remedies. Never heard of everything you mentioned besides the coin rub and the scrapping of the fingernails. Glad you are feeling better. ;)

Forrealz. Those remedies work when you’re sick!! Makes me think of my childhood when my parents used to do all those things to us when me and my siblings were sick. Now, we just take Western meds and it is not the same. :(

Omgawsh! just the other day, i did the same thing to my old lady with the egg. It is said, well what my old lady told me was, it’s to help release stress or any kidn of burden on your body. “Ua kom txhob nyhav nyhav yus lub cev,” to make your body not feel so heavy.

I gotta say, it was disgusting seeing it since the white part turned dark, not dark color, but you can totally see that it’s dirty!

That seems so painful. I just take the medicine and stay in bed when I’m sick and usually the fever breaks in a day or so.

It’s hard for me to picture the egg part.
