Still Life: 4×5 Film Camera

Posted on 15 January 2010

This week, on Wednesday, my Advance Commercial Photography class had our very first shoot of the quarter. This week we shot Still Life Images and my topic was reading glasses and books. First off, for my Advance Commercial Photography class, we are shooting with a different type of camera, we are shooting with a 4×5 view camera. I have a love and hate relationship with the 4×5 view camera, why, well I love it because the camera is super awesome and it captures great details but what I hate about it is the math behind the camera. LOL Well the math is very basic math, but there are so many steps to take before you can actually take your shot. When we are viewing our image before we take the photography, everything is upside down which is a bit hard, but after a while you tend to get use to it. Again I love the great detail this camera captures. I think everyone should try at playing with a 4×5 camera at least once, it’s an awesome camera!

For these camera, you can either have film or digital, if you have a digital back for the 4×5, this camera can capture beautiful digital images, but for this class we are using chrom daylight films.

My original negative is beautifully lit, but then instead of using the proper 4×5 film scanner at school, I just used my brother’s cheap scanner to scan in my image and it totally compress the quality of the image so with that being said the image is a whole lot darker than the original negative and some information on this photo is not captured from the scanner. But for now, enjoy the not so nice quality of the image I had taken of my Still Life assignment.

Was finally able to scan the image using the school’s scanner! Enjoy! Oh notice the difference??

By the way::::: Yes that is my pair of eye glasses, I do wear glasses but I try not to wear it unless I have to have it on, which is hardly ever, only when I am in class or when my eyes are hurting me. And yes, those are my books, I love reading, romance novels are my favorite! I must have 3+ large boxes of romance novels in the storage that I’ve already read. I am weird, I like to waste money on books, even if i’ll never touch it again after the first time I read it. Oh and notice the book looks really new, well I haven’t read this one yet, this book is next on my reading list, I like to have new books waiting in line so that once I finish with the one I am reading at the moment, I would have another book right away so I wont have to go without reading for a day or two. ahhahaa.

The image quality is amazing, but the camera looks like something from the 20s.

Now I understand why you like Lakorn, I never read a romance novel before, I couldn’t get past the cover. :)

Nye, the photo quality is amazing and the camera is of those from the 20′s. Everything about the camera is the same as how it was back then.

Lol.. I can’t help it but enjoy anything romantic! I can get extremely glued onto a book just like I would be glued into a lakorn. LOL
