coconut dough dessert

Posted on 10 January 2010

Here is a very simple and easy yet very tasty dessert that I had learned how to make. (and I have no Idea what to call it so thats my generic name for it! ahahaha) This is the first time I had tried making this dessert myself. Normally my mom would make it when I go see her, but this time when I went by her house, she was a bit busy and it was getting late and the drive was a bit far so she just told me how to make this simple dessert myself.

This dessert comes warm or cold, however you like it. I prefer it warm, but then eating it cold is just as good.

First your ingredients are::::

Rice flour

Coconut Milk

Sugar
Water

Make sure you got a bowl of water heating up on the stove. You can add some coconut milk into the boiling water if you like, I like mines with extra coconut so I add more coconut milk to my boiling water.

First pour the entire packet of rice flour into a bowl then pour some coconut milk and sugar into the bowl and then mix well, if it’s too watery or sticky then add more rice flour, if it’s a bit thick then it’s perfect. (from the above pictures I needed to add more rice flour)

Once your mixture is ready and your water had been boiling, start grabbing the dough (mixture) and make little balls out of it. Use your hands to roll them.  Make sure to roll them into smaller pieces because while they are cooking the dough will get bigger in the boiling water.

Once it’s rolled into a ball or whatever shape you like, put the dough into the hot boiling water, continue to do so for the rest of the dough.

Let it cook for about 5 to 10 minutes and it’s ready to serve. Again, you can have it warm or cold, I like mines warm, it’s yummier in this super cold winter weather.

    Hi – We call it Chè xôi nước (simply glutinous rice ball) in Vietnamese. It taste better if you have crushed peanut or crushed mung bean in the middle . Roll it into a ball like you did but then flattened and put the peanut or mung bean in the middle. Then pinch it back together into a ball shape again. You will need 2 pots. One for cooking the rice ball and one for the ginger sugar syrup. You Cook the ball in one pot until it float up. (that is how you know it is cooked). Then transfer it into bowl with ginger and sugar.
    You can serve it with ginger sugar syrup, some coconut milk, and toasted sesame seed.

    Dallas, that sounds so good! I will have to give that a try and report back to you! But how do you make the ginger sugar syrup? Thanks for the tip and informatioN!

    Hi – The syrup is easy. First I want to clarify something I said on my last comment. I mentioned “bowl” when I should really meant “pot”.
    Ok, Here are what you need: 1 pot for cooking the sticky rice ball and 1 for the ginger sugar syrup. The pot with the ginger sugar syrup happens to be the pot you will transfer the ball to right after you cook it.
    For the syrup: I chopped up some ginger and cut few slices. I melt brown sugar in low heat with little water, add some salt, and throw in the ginger. When the sugar is all melted you add some more water, sugar, or salt depending on your taste then turn the heat up. You don’t want it to be boiling but you want it to simmer. The syrup will become gooey after you put the sticky rice ball in it.
