MOVIE REVIEW:Jao Fah

Posted on 30 March 2009

Finally I get to watch this movie! I had been anticipating this movie since I first heard about it, and finally was able to get both the parts. I had the first part a few weeks ago, but then I refused to watch it until I get my hands on the second part as well. Since my morning class only lasted for 30 minutes today when it’s a 4 hour class due to a death in my teachers family and then my night lab was also canceled since it’s the same teacher and lab is normally canceled on the first day of school anyways and then for my English 191 class it only lasted for an hour today I had a lot of time to kill and decided to watch this movie!

Should I start with the good or the bad? I guess I’ll vent out the bad things before I end with the good things about this movie. It’s always best to vent out he bad so that we can leave with a good note on this movie. Ahahaha. Here are the bads. Well honestly there isn’t much bad about his movie at all. I must say, as Trent had said in his review of the movie, he had said that it was a bit confusing how the soldiers were called “The Vietnamese” in Hmong and was subtitled “communist” in English yet they spoke Thai in the movie. That was one of the biggest flaws about his movie, but then it wasn’t such a big deal about it. I soon enough got over that part.

Okay now on to the real part of the movie review. Okay I got a bit annoyed by one of the solder’s laugh, it was a bit annoying how he puts so much “muahaha” into his sinister laugh that I kind of didn’t find it all that amusing, I wish he would had sounded a bit “real” like one of the other solder. But then of course, I was able to brush that off as well, it didn’t bother me for too long.

To be honesty I hate movies that are bloody and with a lot of killing scenes but I made it through this movie, there are a lot of blood and killing and what not, very disturbing scene for people who are sensitive when it comes to seeing dead bodies and blood (like myself) but the movie was so good and worth it that I went through with the movie and watch all the blood and bodies. It was heart breaking with the dead bodies and the stream of blood. Honestly, I wanted to break down and cry when I saw that part, I wanted to just go and help them so badly, but then of course it is only a movie but then again it was heart breaking.

Another terribly sad part was when the family drank form the poisoned river and ends up dying with the child crying on the side. It breaks my heart so badly watching the child cry and we were left to assume that the child ends up dying as well since there wasn’t anyone to come and safe him. Once again, it broke my heart watching this part; it was truly sad to see that innocent kids, men and women were haunt down and killed due to what had happened many years ago during war times. It’s sad, very sad!

I was a bit annoyed about the ending of this movie. I am glad that they all made it to safety to the boarder of Thailand, but what bummed me out was it just ended as that, I wish they  wouldn’t had rushed so much with the ending and show him finding his girlfriend PaYeng and his younger brother Yeng. It really ruined PaYeng’s character, in this movie they made her seems as if she is a main character but then at the end, there was no indication that KongPeng, our main character found his girlfriend and younger brother.

But once again, this movie is a must see movie, it also came in with subtitles for none Hmong viewers and also for the parts that were spoken in Thai. Over all I gave this movie a 9 out of 10, yes that’s how much I enjoyed this movie. They did a great job making this movie, everyone was great, and the effects and what not are also good. You can actually tell that they spend enough time on this movie. Also the theme song to this movie was a very good and sad song at the same time. When I have time I’ll translate the theme song. For now enjoy the caps. Sorry I kind of went cap crazy. Ahahaha

(sorry if there are any grammar problem in this review, I am a bit tire and did not proofread it)

Oh and sorry, I got a little screencap happy. ahahaha I try to keep them in the correct order, but it might be a little off.

Thanks for the screen caps and review, it sounds like a good movie, but heart breaking and expected from a war movie, and this might bring back too many painful memory for some of us. It has been a while since I watched anything bloody, I don’t know if I could handle it.
