Here is part 1 of 9.
I had just finished watching the movie “Ntxawm thiab Tsov” (Yer and the Tiger) and decided that I should write a review on the movie. Xab Thoj plays Nu Tong, as for Huab Xyooj plays Ntxawm. From my understanding this story was adapted from one of the many Hmong folktales. I thought they played this movie beautifully. The story was fast pace and not dragging. For the first time, I’ve notice that Xab had a small but serious part hence the story mainly focused on Ntxawm and Tsov.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve heard this story. My mom used to tell us this story when we were much younger, I was surprise I still remember some part of this folktale. While watching this movie I kept thinking to myself, “Ntxawm are you an idiot? The tiger had gone to do something, why are you not running away to save yourself?” but I then realized that even if she was to run away, he’ll catch up to her.
I read few comments on the ending, I myself had forgotten the outcome of the ending, but the ending for this particular story was a bit twisted and changed, it was unexpected to me, I did not see it coming yet it was great. The ending left me thinking, so what had happened to Nu Tong? How did it happen as it did?
Over all, I rather enjoyed this movie. It was fast pace and very interesting. Everyone acted very natural in this movie. I don’t recall ever seen Huab before in any movie, but she portrays her character with profession. I give this movie a 9 our of 10. It would have been even better if this was in high quality, but it wasn’t, still that did not bother me much.
If anyone wants to know about some Hmong folktale this movie is a must watch and few others as well.
