Havesting the rice fields in the middle of September
Posted on 14 September 2008
On Saturday I was suppose to go to the Dragon Boat Race in Gainesville Georgia at the Olympic section of Lake Lanier but things came up and we were not able to go. I instead help my aunt and uncle out with their rice farm. Yes really I spent my Saturday working the fields. It was actually a fun day to be honest. My aunt and uncle were harvesting their rice so my cousins and I was there to help them out. They cut the rice stem and then once there are enough they tie the rice into bundles. The bundles are than given to us and we are to hit the rice with a bamboo stick so that the rice would fall off of the stem. It was actually not as tiring as I had thought it would be. It was pretty easy.
I saw other aunts and uncle harvesting their parts of the field too, and to be honest it was great to see them again since I haven’t seen them for a while. So all in all, I had a great Saturday. It was also great to see my old house, boy I sure do miss that place. Now that piece of land seems so foreign to me. I lived in that land for over 6 years and loved it so much, it had became a part of me, and then my parents decided to sale the house and our piece of land. Each time I go there to see the other cousins who still occupy that land, I really miss my old house and all the great time I had there.

The bundles are than set to the side so we can pick them for the next step of harvesting the fields

We set the emty stems to the side to be trash later

Taaaadaaaaa.. Finish.. next step is to put the rice in water so they can start the next step….

We even saw a little while working the fields…

Wow, this is really nice. I saw the rice paddy down from us and was thinking about your aunts’ rice paddies the other day. That is so nice of you to help them, it’ll always be a memorable experience when you look back, I think both for you and your cousins, aunts and uncles. If I have a chance this week, I will go down to take some picture of my neighbor’s rice paddy, it should be about done by now.
I have to agree with Ginger, this is really beautiful. I envy people who do this, my family is very anti-farming. They don’t respect nature and live busy lives. When I see something like this, I envy it. It looks very peaceful.
